Swift Boat Veterans for Bush Caught in Lying Flip-Flop
An article in today's Toronto Star outlines outright lies and flip-flops by the misleadingly named Swift Boats Veterans for "Truth."
The Big Lie
When Sen. Kerry appeared at the DNC with his 12 Vietnam crewmates, Swift Boats Vets for "Truth" attacked with a big lie:
A parade of 13 Swift Boat Veterans, none of whom served on Kerry's boat and in direct contradiction to the recollections of those who did, said such things as:
"His account of what happened and what actually happened are the difference between night and day." (Repeat The Big Lie often enough and uncritical people will start repeating it.)
The Big Flip-Flop
Sen. Kerry's former commander said in the book that Mr. Kerry couldn't be trusted. But George Elliott he lied. And flip-flopped. Elliott recommended John Kerry for both his bravery medals back in 1969.
Elliott now, however, has signed an affidavit for the Swift Boat group saying he regretted the Silver Star.
But one day after the ad started to appear, Elliott recanted his affidavit.
"[I]t was a terrible mistake probably for me to sign the affidavit with those words ... I knew it was wrong."
The next day, however, Elliott changed course yet again, signing a second affidavit for the group, downgrading his "terrible mistake" to a minor correction.
