World AIDS Day

Today is World AIDS Day. AIDS and HIV are still a massive worldwide problem that is growing in Africa and other developing areas. Do you know how many people have died from AIDS worldwide? I didn't. It's 20 million people. Last year, almost 5 million people died of the disease. And there are 37.8 million people living with HIV or AIDS worldwide.

Another interesting statistic: AIDS researchers and activists estimate that $20 billion could significantly alter the course of this disease through education and prevention. $20 billion. The US spent over $150 billion blowing Iraq to smithereens already. If we genuinely believe that all life is precious, this is where we should be investing our money. And, as a bonus, we'd get a bargain versus the price of an unjust war. Imagine that, using the power of the US government to do good. Interesting notion.

Caring is a Moral Value.
